The geographical range, climate, flora, fauna, and also the coun¬try's history make the back¬ground for hunting traditions and practices. Based predominately on the German system, the hunt¬ing and game management in Latvia have also been influenced by Swedish, Polish, and Russian traditions. The hunting morals and manners typical for the socialist era, when Latvia was a part of the Soviet Union, have also left an imprint on the local traditions.
These background features, cou¬pled with relatively pristine nature, determine the peculiari¬ties of hunting and game man¬agement in Latvia, not to be found in "conventional" European countries.

Because of the unsteady Baltic weather, moisture-proof clothing will be useful for a hunter in any season, to say nothing of wearing warm clothes in late autumn and winter. Extreme summer or win¬ter air temperatures are rare. Still, in contrast to the regions of continental climate, even rela¬tively moderate heat or cold may seem unbearable under increased air humidity. Being out in the wilderness for hunting is not like walking in a well-tended park. Overcoming a variety of visible and invisible obstacles, which require substan¬tial exertion, or acquiring skills how to avoid, for instance, acci¬dental falling into a beavers' bur¬row, are the things one has to reckon with when coming to Latvia for hunting.
